As a Librarian I am obviously very interested/invested in libraries. Whenever I visit new places for a decent period of time I always try and pop into the local library. I like to look at the layouts, the book selections, the system they use and just generally get the feel of the place.
Libraries are a completely unique place in that there is literally no other public space like them. They do an incredible amount more than dusty old books which, sadly and weirdly, is still what a lot of people think we do exclusively.
With that in mind, do any of you peeps use libraries? If so what for and if not why not? I hardly ever get to discuss these sorts of points with anyone other than my work colleagues and that is tantamount to preaching to the choir.

Unfortunately, my use of the library is pretty much limited to using the internet if mine is down at home and using the copy machine.
Although I have been in recently to actually get a book out with one of the young people I work with, and I was really impressed with the 'self check-out'-like system they had in place!

Been in the library almost every day for the past month studying. Can't say I've used them much otherwise, hopefully that will change.

I'm guilty of not using libraries that often, I used to occasionally when I was still in school and I've found some pretty cool books because of it. I might pay a visit to my local library soon though, see if they have any stuff on Karl Marx or Buddhism, I want to read up some more of that stuff.

Right now all i can think about is this www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLvXTwFUY90Jokes aside, over the course of years and years and not being in education anymore my use of the library has steadily declined. Which is a shame as technology is taking over the neccesity for physical copies of books. My girlfriend works in waterstones (Am aware thats not the same) but steadily seeing a decrease in sales of books even the big sellers in replacement of kindles etc. Can only imagine this affects librarys aswell. Personally though I love 2nd hand book shops and will always buy rather than borrow as my hectic work schedule means i would probably never get a book back on time these days. Even if i did use the library.

i like libraries, i use them for reading and borrowing and photocopying and just talking to strangers. whether they want me to or not. i just sit real close beside them. and feed off their fear.
